Description Madrenice’s canals are one of the city’s most distinguishing features, and its main means of transportation. The stone-lined canals run through most of the urban area of the city, dividing the landscape into island-like city blocks.
Boat traffic on the canals carries people and supplies throughout the city. Madrenice mostly uses electric boats for travel, but a traditional gondola can occasionally be seen drifting through Madrenice’s extensive waterways. Some sections of the canals include walkways and bridges that allow pedestrians to travel around parts of the city. These walkways are especially common in the commercial and entertainment districts where businesses want increased foot-traffic. The anglers use the bottom of the canals (below where the boats travel) as a street or passageway, and set up private angler-centered businesses and residences in the walls making up the canal.
The state of Madrenice’s canals throughout the city reflect the wealth disparities in Madrenice’s society. The waterway in poorer parts (such as the Fae Slums and El Gris) of town is chipped and worn by erosion, the walkways and bridges are covered in dirt and littered with trash. Refuse floats in the murky waters that run through these sections of town. Conversely, in the upper-class parts of town the walkways and bridges are always kept clean and repaired whenever they get too damaged. Decorative stonework lines the canals, bridges, and walkways. A few of the wealthier neighborhoods have installed filters and water cleaners in the nearby canals, although these devices have achieved limited success.
